Jay Moore Biography
Jay Moore is a true plein air painter. His love of nature and his determination to experience the pristine and beautiful landscapes of the Rocky Mountain region were fostered by his upbringing in the foothills near Evergreen Colorado. His boyhood was spent in the company of his two older brothers, playing in the woods, exploring, hiking and fishing.
After graduating from art school, Jay worked in a graphic design firm in Denver for two years before starting his own freelance business as an illustrator. He recognizes that the pressures of illustration pushed him to a level of professionalism that he carries with him today. But the idea of creating fine art kept tugging at him and after spending a week outdoors studying with a prominent landscape painter, he understood that becoming a plein air artist was going to be his important life’s work.
Today you will often find Jay trekking to remote areas and persevering challenging weather conditions in order to capture a spectacular view on canvas. To satisfy his interest in history and his explorer nature, Jay keeps a journal of his travels, documenting experiences and thoughts. Each canvas includes geographic coordinates of the location for future generations to discover.
Jay’s work appears in many private and corporate collections including the Denver Art Museum. He finds great satisfaction working with collectors and has completed over 100 commissions or “Collector’s Choice” projects, as he likes to call them. He enjoys this work and says “people who are drawn to these projects are acquiring more than a painting, they’re acquiring an experience.” Interested collectors may sponsor a painting trip, where they choose a location and have the first right of refusal on all studies Jay completes during the trip, as well as their choice of any studies enlarged in the studio.
When he’s not outdoors painting, you can find him at his home studio in Parker, Colorado. Jay and his wife Karen encourage their two young sons to explore the outdoors with frequent hiking and fishing excursions, just as Jay experienced in his boyhood.
