En Plein Aire
French Impressionist Monet and Taos Society Impressionist Gonske

 Claude Monet
Left: Claude Monet, 1840 - 1926 "Apple Trees in Bloom" 1873 24 x 40 Oil on Canvas.  This painting may be viewed at The Metropolitan in New York.

Right: Walt Gonske, "Velarde Apple Orchard" 30 x 36 Oil on Canvas. This painting may be acquired at Saks Galleries Denver, Colorado.

Claude Monet was the founder of the French Impressionist style of painting and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein aire landscape painting.

Walt Gonske has many of Monet's traits: prolific, a practitioner of plein aire painting and a love of nature.  Walt Gonske paints over 300 days a year on the road from small to large canvases.  He paints throughout Northern New Mexico and Colorado, among other locations. He is literally driven to create the emotion he feels bound to in nature. His brushstrokes are thick like that of an impasto painter using vivid color to express the beauty in the land.  He is a member of the Taos Society of Artists created by Old Masters such as "Buck" Dunton, Blumenschein and Crouse.

The American West Then and Now
Colorful, brilliant skies and canyons depicting the West

Gerard Curtis Delano, 1890 - 1972"Family Affair" 16 x 20 Oil on Masonite
G. Russell Case, "Western Skies" 16 x 20 Oil

Gerard Curtis Delano, studied with illustrators Dean Cornwell, Harvey Dunn and N.C. Wyeth.  After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, he moved West to Colorado, settling permanently in 1933.  He was greatly inspired after his first trip into Navajo Country setting the tone for his most famous works.

G. Russell Casetakes his cues from nature but never literally.  While there is an unmistakable honesty present in his painted environments - viewers are reminded of the great artists before him like Delano. His artistic forebears through distinctive use of color and light influence him. Case's "Western Skies" is available at Saks Galleries - American Art Invitational gala opening May 9, 2014.
